Versatile duplex

This month , we have a particular focus on duplex stainless steels , a robust and versatile member of the stainless family , which have the unique distinction of being both austenitic and ferritic . As our readers are all stainless steel aficionados , I ’ m sure I hardly need to explain to you what a duplex is . However , the types of applications that these materials are being used in continue to expand and diversify . We ’ ve gathered some particularly noteworthy examples this month , and also some research that I know you ’ ll find interesting . The first is our end user feature , which was penned by speakers from last year ’ s Duplex World conference . Immad Rohela and Ahmad Rana present a case study looking at a tricky series of failures in a duplex heat exchanger , in which formic acid played a critical role . Claes Tigerstrand presents an in-depth analysis of the carbon footprints of various materials , comparing how duplex stainless steels stack up against other common materials in the process industry . It ’ s not always easy to find the information needed to make a fair comparison , explains Claes , and any person or company who is keen to achieve this will appreciate his insights . Our regular freelancer , James Chater , has stepped back from the details to give a broad overview of the international duplex market . He explains that new grades , especially in lean , hyper and super duplex , mean that end users are more likely than ever before to find a grade exactly tailored for their particular applications . “ Better fabrication and welding properties , especially in 3D printing , allow massive and stress-bearing objects to be made in less time and at a lower cost . Duplex is also improving the processes and products it serves , bringing higher quality , lower maintenance and longer life ,” he explains in his feature article . We have plenty of articles on other topics to keep you entertained and educated as well . This month we are excited to welcome back the Dutch supplier Krogman Metals to our cover . It ’ s been just over a year since we last visited them , yet a lot has changed . Investments in facilities , equipment and staff are driving forward growth for this young ambitious company , which is already making a splash on the European market .
