Plenary lecture 1 . Brilliant failures : working together , failing together , learning together . Tuesday , 26 September , 10:00 |
|||||||||||
Technology is a great enabler of innovation , but this doesn ’ t mean its implementation is always easy or successful . Paul Iske stresses the need to accept risk and learn from experiences with projects that didn ’ t produce the results people were aiming for . In our dynamic and complex world , failing is not only inevitable , but also an essential learning process . What is the impact of culture on how we deal with failure ? Whiles everyone agrees that we should learn from our failures , no one tells us how to do this . The Institute of Brilliant Failures has developed a method and some tools to extract the lessons learned and make it possible to use them at another moment , at another place . By doing so , we are able to develop ‘ Failure Intelligence ’. |
Biography : Paul Iske is the founder and CFO ( Chief Failure Officer ) of the Institute of Brilliant Failures . Its mission is to highlight the importance of experimentation to achieve paradigm shifts and breakthrough innovation . He is Visiting Professor Knowledge-driven Innovation at the Department of Information Science , Stellenbosch University , South Africa . Paul is Chairman of the Dutch Personalised Healthcare Catalyst Foundation , which aims to accelerate the transition towards personalised , data-driven healthcare . He is an international author , consultant and speaker on innovation , entrepreneurship , knowledge management and |
Plenary lecture 2 . Opportunities for stainless steel in the energy transition Tuesday , 26 September , 10:30
The energy transition requires large scale deployment of new technology . Obviously , this comes with major materials challenges . However , despite entering uncharted territory with new process conditions and degradation mechanisms , there is also an ever-lasting push to reduce costs . Related short-cuts in material selection have led to expensive mistakes and failures , which delay the energy transition . This will be shown with examples from CCS and geothermal energy projects . Clearly more sustainable material solutions are required . It opens new opportunities for stainless steels and other corrosion resistant alloys .
Biography : Marc Wilms is a Principal Materials & Corrosion Engineer working at Shell ’ s Technology Centre in Amsterdam . He supports upstream assets , and new projects , as well as the development and deployment of new technology . His research activities include oil & gas production but focus mainly on New Energy technologies . Marc is the Global Subject Matter Expert for sour service materials and for pipeline materials at Shell . He is a Mechanical Engineer ( M . Sc .) and holds a Ph . D . in corro-

Plenary lecture 3 . If it ’ s uncomfortable , you ’ re doing it right - sustainability strategies for future-proof businesses . Wednesday , 27 September , 09:30
“ Don ’ t let perfect be the enemy of the good ” is a common mantra to encourage rapid action in complex environments . However , Felix Bärmann argues it is also an ill-suited approach for businesses looking to embark on meaningful sustainability transformations . Felix will zoom in on the role of business in solving the greatest challenge of the 21st century : meeting everyone ’ s needs within our planetary limits . Introducing key concepts and tools for sustainability in a business context , he will argue that difficult conversations are the right ones to have . Against the backdrop of his experience in advising board rooms on sustainability strategy , Felix will share which approaches to change typically work - and which don ’ t . The presentation includes “ What 2050 could look like for the stainless steel industry if we continue business as usual ”.
Biography : Felix Bärmann is a Manager at Nordic Sustainability , a Danish future-facing strategy consultancy . Leading the company ’ s sustainabil-
