In October, South Devon College took part in the ‘Local accountability and autonomy in FE’ survey. Over two days Alex Falconer HMI met with employers, students, governors, staff, managers and other key partners. Below is the feedback from the survey:

* SDC is “deeply enmeshed in the local community”.

* SDC responds quickly to demands- excellent examples of development include work skills, personal and social development, excellent work by ACL and Apprenticeships.

* NHS fully involved in futures for the area.

* SDC provides regional strategic and local leadership, strong operational leadership and is fully involved in the community.

* Staff are empowered and are confident.

* Principalship seen as collaborative and consultative, focussed on quality and learners.

* Senior Managers seen as leading agendas.

Good use of data sharing to inform provision development eg Newton Abbot NEETS Co-design – co-commissioning partners.

* A highly successful model responding to need, with partners' views clearly shaping the curriculum eg Police/South West Water.

* Good reputation for joint bids, anticipating priorities and obtaining funds.

* SMEs value supportive involvement in bidding.

* SDC very clear about its role nationally, regionally and locally.

* Good celebration of success, including Apprenticeships.

* Excellent joint working with employers – more than 1000 employers every year. High levels of flexibility and responsiveness to employers .

* SDC develops effective networks, good example of collaboration in LIS.

* SDC is in a key position for ‘others’ to consult.

* Governors and Clerk are well-informed and confident about the new code, RPA and strategic matters.

* SMT are held accountable via the Strategic Framework, which is still best practice.
