s sTaBILIS STABILIS Grey College Secondary March 2018 [JourNaL] The art of excelling while inspiring is a rare yet very important talent ReVIEw Heroes are in a league of their own The class of 2018 faces an enormous academic Everest At the end of 2017 Grey was on its feet applauding the 2017 matrics and wishing them good luck on their journey into adulthood. Early 2018, however, once the matric results had been announced, there was distinct change in overall attitude towards the class of ’17, so much so that the 2018 matrics were told that they “don’t want to end up like last year”. Now without justifying the 2017 matric results, is it okay that our attitude toward them has changed so drastically? Would you not still be proud of your son for making the school team after finding out he didn’t do his homework that one time? The matrics of 2018 feel extra pressured to achieve good academic results this year. The cause of this is of course the frequent check-ups done by mr Scheepers and mr Els. While it is nice to know that it is in your best interest, one cannot help but feel like you are being compared to the previous year. You feel the pressure of also ending up branded as a bad year. In truth, academic results have nothing to do with being a good or bad year, neither do sporting results, or cultural results. It can all be boiled down to one thing, how you made people feel. Maya Angelou once said “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did but people will never forget how you made them feel.” I would like to adjust this quote to: “You will forget what Grey said, you will forget what Grey did but you will never forget how Grey made you feel.” The same can be said about any year group. The quality of the year group is thus ultimately determined by how that year group made the school feel. It is, however, often the case that this infectious feeling that the Grey spirit creates, gives rise to much more tangible achievements, like the first team rugby being undefeated and yes, good academic achievement. These are the results of the matrics trying to leave the rest of the school feeling inspired and not merely satisfied. The matric mindset should thus not be: The school is watching, what do they want us to do? but rather: The school is watching, let’s show them Plug in all systems: Let the battle begin If you are a Sword Art Online fan, then this is the game for you. Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet is a new role-playing game based on the anime series, Sword Art Online. The game’s release date was on the 23rd of February 2017 and it is published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Sword Art Online: Fatal Battle was developed by Dimps. This game was rated a 7/10 by Steam and 66% by Metacritic and is available on Playstation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows. The characters are Kirito, Asuna and a silent protagonist. This game is based on a silent protagonist who begins his day at Gun Gale Online. GGO is based on a territory called SBC Flugel. The territory is locked tight and can only be accessed by players accompanied by rare AI companions called ArFA- sys. The purpose of these companions is to unlock the raid for the players to complete the game. This can be done by upgrading the ArFA-sys. Kirito’s childhood friend Kureha is approached by one of the ArFA-sys and avoids being noticed by Kirito and Asuna. This is a race to complete GGO - but there is a surprise lying at the heart of GGO. I think the fact that Kirito is not the protagonist in this game was a genius move by Dimps. Not only is it a surprise, but it also makes the game a third- person combat game, which is very effective. The graphics of the game are spectacular and the controls are simple to master. There are some weak spots in the game. I found the storyline to be very confusing and added to that, there is no background that one can refer to for better comprehension of the story. Despite the story line, this is still a good game and I give it a rating of 8 out of 10. what we can do. Let us thus not remember the class of ‘17 by their academic results, but rather by how they made us feel. One should also remember that achievement is not only about distinctions, but it is measured by the quality of the person who achieves a matric pass. In 2018, let us not strive only for great academic achievement or great achievement on the sports field. But let us strive toward being a great year by making the school feel inspired by what we can do. Achieve this and 2018 is our oyster. If you’re a DC fan, this is the movie for you. Ben Affleck stars as Batman in Zack Snyder’s Justice League and he’s accompanied by Henry Cavill as Superman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Jason Momoa as Aquaman. This movie is based on the DC Comic Justice League by Gardner Fox. The production budget for this movie was 300 million dollars. A ruler named Steppenwolf attempts to conquer Earth through the combined energies of Mother Boxes, but is defeated by a unified army. Steppenwolf, with a stronger army, returns to reclaim the three Mother Boxes to attempt to conquer Earth. Bruce Wayne, along with Diana Prince recruits Arthur Curry (Aquaman), Barry Allen (The Flash), Victor Stone (Cyborg) and an unexpected ally to stop Steppenwolf from conquering the planet. The visual effects are amazing. It makes you feel like you’re actually in the scene. I rate this movie a 7 out of 10. 9
