Rejoice in the Easter Promise! Parishioners have asked clergy for the meaning of the wording "...He descended into hell..." which is recited in the Apostles Creed. (“He was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead.”) The word that is translated as ‘hell’ is from the Hebrew word sheol which means ‘place of the dead’. The word ‘sheol’ was translated into Greek as ‘hades’ and then into English as ‘hell’. When we hear the word ‘hell’ we think of the place of the damned, but originally the word meant the abode of the dead. Upon his death, Jesus descended to the place of the dead to announce to the righteous who had died that their time of waiting was over for the gates of heaven had been opened. They were the first to hear the good news of Jesus’ victory over sin and death Palm Sunday Homily If anyone is interested in the book Fr. Henry referred to in his Palm Sunday homily, it is called The Dance of Christian Life. Profits from book sales go to the new cancer center in Bellingham, WA. Books are $25 each and checks payable to Fr. Scott Connolly. Be sure to give return address information for him to send the book. Requests & payment to: Fr. Scott Connolly; 2116 Cornwall Ave.; Bellingham, WA 98225 Holy Communion at Our Parish • Communion in the Hands, the original way the early Church received for several centuries, is the preferred and most hygienic way to receive. (Eucharistic Ministers use alcohol hand-wipes before distributing Communion.) • “Make a throne of your hands to receive your King.” (St. Cyril of Jerusalem 348 A.D.) Grabbing the host with 2 fingers or placing your hands side by side so the Host could fall through is not appropriate. One hand should be UNDER the other so as to take the Host and place it in your month. • The correct response is, “Amen!” (So be it!) when the minister says, “The Body/Blood of Christ.” • Profound bows (from the waist) and genuflecting before communion are not designated in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM). Both can cause accidents. People have tripped over those genuflecting in the Communion line. • Intinction (dipping the Sacred Host into the Precious Blood) is permitted ONLY by a priest or deacon. prayer Centering/ Contemplative Prayer Thursdays @ 6:30pm in the Spirit Center Nancy Fertig 922-4891 Prayer Chain Dale Eppig 923-4961 Rosary Weekdays & Saturdays @ 7:30am in the Church Adoration Tuesdays @ 12pm 4th Monday @ 7:30pm in the Chapel Tom Lelyo 404-8604 Helping Hands (formerly Meal Train +) This special ministry is available to parishioners who: • may be returning to an empty home after surgery and need a meal • are expecting family in town for a funeral and are unable to feed everyone • are unable to repair a handrail or trim the shrubs because of a handicap or disability The above listing is a guideline.
