Vestry Notes:
Since the last magazine was there have been two meetings of the Vestry, on
July 5th and August 9th.
One of the main items at the July meeting was the appointment of Matthew
Whiteford as Property Convener, initially for a few months before he decides
whether to take on the job permanently. The Rev. Lesley-ann outlined
several things that were important for a Property Convener to deal with, e.g.
Service agreements with regard to boilers etc. She pointed out that records
of these needed to be better kept in the future and that it was not the priest’s
job to deal with such things! New central heating boilers were needed to
reduce our heating bills.
The Rev. Lesley-ann also pointed out that help was needed with pastoral
work. It was agreed that a group of Vestry members, beginning with Brigitte
as People’s Warden, should be in charge of phoning members of the
congregation to let them know about people who were ill and in need of help.
The meeting received a written report from Willie Whitelaw about the
progress of the Men’s Shed project. A group of men had been recruited and
had met four times, about 6 to 8 people attending from a list of 15 men from
a wide range of backgrounds. Mr Whitelaw had run a stall at Castlemilk Fun
Day on June 11th and had handed out 200 leaflets about the project.
The August Vestry meeting was rather shorter due to the absence of the
Rev. Lesley-ann who had begun a period of compassionate leave the
previous day because of Ashley’s illness.
We heard that the Gas Board had been in to inspect the boilers and we were
still waiting for them to give us an estimate for installing new commercial
ones. We also heard the good news that the re-decorating of the kitchen had
been finished even if some of us felt that we might go dizzy if we had to look
at the floor for any length of time!
Another important item was Brigitte’s announcement that she was going to
resign as Lay Representative by the time of the next AGM, which,
incidentally, has been fixed provisionally for November 20 th. Brigitte carried
out a number of jobs, People’s Warden, assistant magazine editor and being
on the rota for tea duty and for reading and doing intercessions at the
Sunday service so it is high time that someone else relieved her of at least
one of these duties. There seems to be one member of the Vestry who is
thinking about taking this job on and I am glad to say that there is also a
member of the congregation who may be prepared to take on the job of
Secretary. Prayers do work!
Paula Fleetwood.
