(See also page 11) Reading the April magazine article Then & Now really took me back to my time as an usherette in the State Picture House. I worked each night of the week from the early 1960’s into the 1970’s, selling tickets before the film and confectionary during the intervals. The State had two kiosks, one downstairs, one upstairs, and only one screen – tiny in comparison to the cinemas of today, but just as much fun. The highlight of the week for my children was the Saturday Matinee, usually showing at 10am until midday. They would save their pocket money for it and buy their bag of penny dainties to happily chew on during the film. My opportunity to see a film would come when the projectionist brought in the new reel and would run it to make sure it was in full working order. Quite often I would only see half of the movie before duty called. The next day I could catch up with the second half! Thank you for printing the article and photo. It really was a nostalgic look back into the past. Freda Editor: The St Oswald’s family was sorry to hear that you had had an accident and wish and pray for your speedy recovery and return to the church following the care your family are giving you.
