IT IS AMAZING WHAT YOU FIND
It is all the rage.
In the modern home nowadays we are all urged to do the latest thing –
declutter!
But that wasn’t the way of my mother, the late Mrs Nora Templeton, a
founder member of St Oswald’s.
Born in Appleby, Cumbria – scene of the winter floods – she kept many
mementoes of letters, photographs, household items, even magazines –
some dating back to the 19th century!
I was trawling through some of her old papers a short time ago and I came
across a fascinating bound compilation of magazines which had originally
belonged to my grandmother, Jane Ann Atkinson who lived in the small
village of Knock, not far from Appleby.
I decided that the compiled magazines of 19th century vintage from the
Knock/Appleby area might be of interest to the Appleby-in-Westmorland
Society and sent them there.
Mrs Maggie Clowes of the Society takes up the story....
SURPRISE GIFT SHEDS NEW LIGHT ON THE BAND OF HOPE
Posted 10/01/16 by Maggie Clowes
Pictures of its many banners and huge parades
have become familiar to members of the
Society.
We knew of course what its purpose was - to
persuade the young to resist the lure of the
demon drink. But we didn’t really know how this
was done. But the gift of a collection of Band of
Hope reviews (monthly magazines) gives us a
good idea of how it was done.
The original owner was Miss J Atkinson of
Knock and the family have preserved the
reviews from 1888 -1893. We are so grateful to
Mrs Anne Young for preserving these
fascinating documents and giving them to the Society.
Hopefully her action will inspire others who have family memorabilia to find a
home for them if they do not want them themselves.
