He thought that it was one way of introducing young people to the biblical events. He also thought that he had not been in any way disrespectful of Jesus or the apostles. I think, that maybe the way he pictured Paul could be seen as such, but Paul was certainly a most interesting figure in that drama, his conversion based on his own account and in the beginning seen as suspicious by Christians. He might have been a double agent, not for the Romans, but working for the Jews. Beard was asked what he had in mind to write about next, and he told us that he was thinking about John, since he must be still alive while Jesus has not yet returned. I found the book fascinating, although a bit relentless, too long and detailed. Ask me for it if you would like to read it.
