That hill, that house
Mesmeric sounds of the didgeridoo
Bring haunting images of this wide land
Soaring sounds of young voices
Bring visions for the future
Music and lyrics echo a country’s soul
Images and words paint a city’s story
Aplomb and grace of a young compere
Vibrancy and enthusiasm of tap dancing masters.
Memories of a new migrant
Over forty years ago
Of a first stroll to the top of a hill
Of gum trees, cold wind and a ceremonial stone
In the middle of trees and a small city.
The centre of that new city
The centre of a nation
Crowned now with a nation’s house
A unifying vibrant place
For a diverse and vibrant people
Canberra and its house of the hill.

Our Uniting
Church Presbytery shared its
support for
refugees at the
rally in Garema
Place on 11
October.
It was just one
of many church,
university, union
and community
groups participating, along
with huge
numbers of
individuals.
