“ Our ” Maddie Bishop ( daughter of Liz and Mark Bishop , granddaughter of Jeff and Marge Bishop and Margaret Hunt ) has been making a name for herself as a photographer for quite some years now .
This news is worthy of her super excitement , for the Monash Gallery of Art ( MGA ) originally Waverley City Gallery is changing its name and focus to become the Museum of Australian Photography ( MAPh ), the pre-eminent national institution dedicated to championing Australian photography .
The gallery ’ s original collection spanned all types of visual art , including but not limited to paintings , sculpture and photography . However , with no other institutions in the country dedicating their knowledge and expertise exclusively to the collection of Australian photography , a resolve was made to solely concentrate on this art form – which was both ground-breaking and a first of its kind in Australia .
The new focus makes it one of the most culturally significant photography institutions in the country as well as an integral part of the City of Monash ’ s vision of a city that celebrates and advocates for the arts and creative industries .
This news follows hard on the heels of another announcement - the recent Powerhouse Photography in Sydney development ( taking in the former Australian Centre For Photography ).
It has been suggested that Australian photography may be in for a new era of celebration . And Madeline Bishop is right there amongst it .
Now the National Capital needs a dedicated national gallery of photography - the absence of a venue focused on photographic work does seem a massive gap in an otherwise eclectic range of galleries and museums of National significance .
