The Peoples Climate Assembly
Federal Parliament reopened on 4 February 2020, and a coalition of
activists groups and supporters organised a gathering on the lawn
outside of Parliament House which they called The Peoples Climate
Assembly. A range of activities took place over several days.
It was well attended by people from many different walks of life, includ-
ing farmers, churchgoers, unionists, grandparents, environmentalists,
people opposed to coal mining and fracking, wildlife carers and mem-
bers of political parties. There were at least some climate change deni-
alists and coal mining supporters as well.
Your editor went there for a couple of hours and heard most of the poli-
ticians who addressed the crowd, making passionate speeches. Most
from a series of Independents were well received, Labor’s Mark Butler
was drowned out by chants of "No Coal, No Coal, No Coal". No Liber-
als or Nationals spoke - perhaps they were not invited.
Some of the signs displayed by people were amusing, some abusive,
others thought-provoking. Here are photos of a sample of them.
