Congratulations Toni Hassan
Congratulations to Toni Hassan of the Holy Cross congregation, who has
received the ACT House of Assembly Speaker’s award for emerging artists.
A media release from the Speaker, Joy Burch MLA, said:
“Joy Burch, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, congratulates the winners of
the annual Legislative Assembly award for emerging artists.
The prize, awarded to two final year students from the ANU School of Art and
Design, was presented to this year’s winners at a ceremony as part of the
school’s graduating exhibition 2018 on Friday night. This year’s winners are:
• Toni Hassan for Shifting ground and King Billy 2018, acrylic on canvas, and
• Kerry Martin for the series Guilt (367 hours and 2 minutes) 2018, embroidery
on velvet
The prize, a $500 grant to each of the winning students, is to help with the cost
of materials associated with artistic practice.
The winners are also invited to have their works exhibited in the London Circuit
corridor of the Assembly building throughout 2019, where they can be viewed
from the street.
‘I’d like to thank all of the artists for the significant contribution they make to
visual arts, and I wish them all every success in their future careers’, Speaker
Burch said. ‘The Legislative Assembly’s Art Advisory Committee has developed
a strong relationship with the ANU School of Art and Design over many years
now, and it is a privilege to have this opportunity to foster visual arts in the
ACT.’
