Be Slavery Free

Did you know that there are more people in slavery in the world today than at any other time in history ?
40 + million people in slavery . And 25,200 more are being added every single day . Despite all of our combined efforts , globally we help less than 150 people out of slavery on an average day . 25 million of these people are in forced labour in factories , farms and fishing .
Be Slavery Free is seeking to solve this global problem by preventing it occurring the first place . It lives by the saying “ it ’ s better to build a fence at the top of the cliff , than run ambulances at the bottom ”. It ’ s hard to quantify their work - they can ’ t directly count the number of victims who have been rescued , or the number of children who do not labour in cocoa farms and instead go to school because of the work it does . It works with businesses and industries with practices that will eliminate slavery . It educates consumers with the knowledge that they need to choose slavery-free products . It networks civil society to work together to end this heinous crime . It lobbies governments for better regulations and guidelines to stop slavery .
Our passion , interest , concern over this issue can have a huge impact to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking before there are victims to rescue . Be Slavery Free invites us to explore its website , join its mailing list , sign its petitions and donate ! It says we can solve this 40 + million person problem , together .
In the lead up to Easter , those of us in church one Sunday morning heard a short talk by Toni Hassan of Holy Cross urging us to make ethical decisions when we purchased our chocolate so that we did not add to the slavery .
