LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
SEPTEMBER 2019
To members of SJGCC,
We are rounding out the summer agronomic activity and course projects with the
completion of our final aerification to the greens, fairways, and tees. Larger tines were
used through the course, with a tighter spacing, the alleviate the compaction and allow
proper nutrients to reach the roots. This did remove a larger amount of course material
resulting in a longer recovery, but I feel we are in a great position moving into Fall.
Our Greens enhancement project is nearing completion as we finalize the front of number
six. We have exhausted our supply of sod from the nursery green and are in the process
of its rehabilitation for next season. We were able to tackle some of the largest portions of
intrusion on the course, but our work is not yet complete. I believe the new greens mowers
and groomers are keeping the intrusion in control under we can begin our work again in
the spring of 2020.
Soon we will be applying our third fertilizer application of the year to the whole course.
The Fall application will help feed to plant through dormancy and provide carbohydrates
as it rejuvenates in the spring. Additionally, a preemergent application will be applied to
halt and control and winter weed pressure on the course. These two applications will help
keep the course looking its best through the winter months.
Thank you,
Andy Maguire
Superintendent
