LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
MARCH 2019
To the members of SJGCC,
We are very optimistic with course conditions in the following weeks of March. With many
projects taken place this winter, concentrating on peripheral areas, priorities will now begin
taking place to continue to improve course conditions. This month includes a couple of key
applications that will ensure success in weed and insect control going into the following
months.
Our first application will be for mole cricket control and will ensure continued success
of subduing populations that can adversely affect turfgrass. This will be taking place in
the first week of March and will be a process applied before any play is present. The next
application being applied will be our spring pre-emergent herbicide application. This will
ensure success in control of warm season weeds.
We have started some work on the contaminated areas of the greens and this process will
be underway in the month of March at a much more consistent rate. Plans will remain the
same, and that will be to strip or plug contaminated areas based on size. The turfgrass will
be harvested from our nursery green and will be grown in on these areas in the following
weeks of planting. Conditions will be interrupted for a couple weeks, but as the plants take
root conditions will be restored with better growing conditions.
With key applications and sod projects taking place, we plan to continue to improve the
conditions of the golf course, as see fit. The month of March will be an important month for
the improvement of the health of the turfgrass with these applications, as well as fertilizing,
and continuing to push growth and maintain the health of the plant. All of this will ensure
success in then goal to provide optimal course conditions.
Thank you,
Andy Maguire
