Stillwater is home to one of the longest standing churches in Minnesota . The Episcopal Church of the Ascension , Stillwater was founded in 1846 , and when you enter the doors today , you will see a community filled with new life .
Robin , a member of Ascension , describes moving back to Stillwater in need of grounding . Having grown up in the Episcopal Church , she came to Ascension . “ I enjoy the people , and having an anchoring in a community is helpful for raising kids .” She hopes that Ascension can continue to , “ meet people where they ’ re at ,” and promote faith when there is a lack of hope .
Rev . George Anne describes the community and their traditions as a ‘ treasure trove ’.
“ When you walk into an Episcopal church , you will notice that the liturgy is traditional , and that the theology is progressive .”
Leadership doesn ’ t pretend to know all the answers , as shown through their tagline , ‘ Free to Question ’. “ We value mystery . Jesus invites us to see the invisible and the brokenhearted , people on the margins . We take that to heart .”
Throughout its history , Ascension has been an integral part of the Stillwater community , and hopes to continue to provide opportunities for the community to gather . With other area churches , Ascension hosts a free supper on the last Sunday of each month at 5:00pm . Last Sunday Suppers are to promote community and connection , as well as provide a free meal to anyone who may need one .
Looking to the future , Ascension will soon begin building an outdoor plaza on their grounds . Congregation members envision being able to host musical performances and other community gatherings in this space .
