Finding the balance...
I have been involved in Theatre productions from a very young age. Most recently, I took part in the Academy Award Winning Broadway Musical, " West Side Story”. This was the first Broadway Musical to be held at NAPA and was of monumental success! It attracted Heads of States and Foreign Ministers from other Caribbean islands for the Opening Night and was followed by several nights of sold out shows. At this musical, I played one of the lead roles, " Pepe ", the right-hand man to my gang leader.
Theatre is not only about performance, but it ' s a means of sending a message to the community at large. The Broadway Musical, " West Side Story ", for instance aimed at portraying the ill effects of organized gangs in society( murders, lack of respect amongst citizens) and thus the need for peace and love. Theatre is relaxing to my mind and soul. It remains an avenue through which I will be able have fun and balance my time when I am admitted to the Bar as an Attorney.
Shari Deonarinesingh, Year 2- Musician
I’ ve been playing music all my life. I began playing piano at the age of 5, and at the age of 12 I began playing the guitar. It was through playing the guitar however that I found my passion for music. It was an instrument I felt, truly loved me! Later on, I learnt to play the steel pan and developed an affinity to this, our national instrument.
I believe that my greatest strength is having the ability to play music at any given time. I have participated in music festivals and play off competitions for several years where I was a finalist. I’ ve engaged in steel-band orchestras namely the Achaiba Steel Orchestra and University of Toronto Steel Band Ensemble. I also take the opportunity to play in church as well as for functions, charities and for my parents. Playing music, not only allows for a diversion from my study periods but its soothing effects helps me to unlock my full potential.
