Do you think the St . Augustine Attorneys of 2015 will be any different than those who went to Cave Hill ?
Students going to Barbados had that mix of cultural regional experience and here they will not get that part . But students going on to Hugh Wooding will get the opportunity to interact with the regional students . I would think the legal education is comparative with what you would receive in Barbados and here . In terms of the library resources , that is something this university has the capacity to fulfil .
Tell us about your experience with mooting .
I mooted as a student locally , and when I worked in Texas I worked at an advocacy institute that prepared students for mooting . I would encourage the students at the University of Guyana to participate in mooting and debates . I took students to Jessup ; the biggest moot in the world , but nothing prepares them for that kind of experience . It helps prepare the students for advocacy skills , writing and research , and I find that the kind of confidence students would have coming back from mooting , nothing compares to it .
What are your thoughts on the quality of mooting at the Law Society ’ s last competition ?
It was a good start . I think it was really good that students were willing to do it .
What is your biggest pet peeve as a lecturer ?
Well that would be students talking and I think it ’ s rude .
What would you say is the greatest academic strength of the faculty of law ?
I think having full time academics is key and this is something we ’ ve only just begun ! We ’ re going to build in strength however , because we are committed to that .
If not law , then ...?
I ’ ll probably write novels or something because I love creative writing . That is something I started doing from young .
Where do you see the St Augustine Law Faculty in the future and what are your personal goals for this institution ?
I think we will develop in strength in terms of academic publishing , conferences and student mooting , and other extracurricular activities . I would like the student society to be involved in some sort of outreach programme and would encourage students to do the legal aid programme for practical experience and start from this level to collaborate with the Hugh Wooding Law School .
Do you have any final words of advice to convey to the readers of this magazine ?
You have to follow your passion and find what makes you happy , and sometimes the opportunity presents itself and you find that you love it ; but embrace life and take care of your fitness and your health .
