R&I specializes in customized commercial glass installation for small and large commercial projects throughout the Bay Area. Ray Horne, R&I’s owner/operator, is a member of the Glazier’s Local Union No. 718. In the spring of 2014, Ray began coming to the SFPUC’s Contractors Assistance Center seeking advice about how to start a business. The Center assisted Ray in the initial stages of R&I’s formation, as well as learning how to run a business, getting certified as a Local Business Enterprise and preparing bids. According to Ray, the Center’s services and assistance have been “invaluable to R&I.” R&I recently won a contract to install the glass, brake metal, and flashing systems at the Southeast Water Pollution Control Plant as part of a project under the Sewer System Improvement Program. riglassworks.net A Success Story continued and organizations like CityBuild and Rising Sun to offer training programs. After Nyzeina completed the pre-apprentice program, OEWD and the SFPUC worked together to place her with FD Thomas (FDT), a company that specializes in applying coatings and waterproofing for big construction projects. FDT is a subcontractor to Monterey Mechanical Inc. (MMI) on one of the SSIP’s projects that will upgrade the clarifiers at the Southeast Treatment Plant. “If you have passion and energy we can train you,” said Ron VanAirsdale, the general superintendent for MMI who runs the day- to-day construction activity for the project. “If you have passion and energy we can train you.” VanAirsdale encourages females to think about construction, “if they come to work every day, are engaged in the work, motivated, and willing to learn, women have a place on my crew.” Construction opportunities are available in a number of trades such as operating engineers, millwrights, plumbers, and laborers. When asked why she decided to become an industrial painter, Nyzeina said it is something she can do for a long time and felt she “could handle it better than other trades.” Additionally, becoming a union member can lead to a career opportunity with great pay, worker protections, benefits, and stability for her and her 12-year old son.
