BAYVIEW COMMUNITY
& PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The SSIP CityWorks internship is a unique public/private/community
partnership made possible by the San Francisco Public Utilities
Commission (SFPUC) Community Benefits Policy. Since its inception
in 2012, the SSIP CityWorks Internship Program has aimed to have
a positive impact on the Bayview-Hunter’s Point (BVHP) community,
which is directly impacted by the Sewer System Improvement
Program (SSIP).
SSIP CityWorks is a partnership between SFPUC, and its contracting
community, and Young Community Developers (YCD) a 501c (3)
community-based organization that has been in BVHP for over
44 years. YCD has become one of the premiere organizations
responsible for decreasing the high unemployment rate within
the community and providing quality trainings and employment
placement opportunities for residents.
SSIP CityWorks aims to increase the participation of women and
underrepresented minorities within the fields of Architecture & Urban
Planning, Engineering, Finance & Accounting, Communications
& Government Relations, and Operations & Environmental
Management. The overall goal of the program is to create a pipeline
between BVHP residents into careers working for the SFPUC and
their partners.
In 2018, the SSIP CityWorks proudly launched its seventh year of
programming. There were nine Community Benefits Partners who
hosted this year’s 15 interns. The interns ranged in age between
16-19 years old and consisted of rising high school juniors to
college/university sophomores.
