4 SEWER SYSTEM IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM | Grey. Green. Clean. THE SSIP IS BREAKING GROU & MAKING STRID The Sewer System Improvement Program (SSIP) is a major component of the City of San Francisco’s comprehensive approach to addressing the issues of: Aging Infrastructure, Seismic Vulnerability, Climate Change and Stormwater Management, Water Quality, and Responsible Resource Recovery by incorporating new technologies to improve our communities and quality of life. We are now several years into the multi-billion-dollar, citywide Program, investing in a modern, reliable, and sustainable system to protect public health and the environment for now and generations to come. 2018 was a year that saw internal and external transitions - our inaugural Director retired, and we welcomed a new client leader in Wastewater Enterprise Assistant General Manager Greg Norby. We saw the completion of three essential projects: Mission & Valencia Streets Green Gateway, Holloway Green Street, and North Point Facility Outfall Rehabilitation. Major construction broke ground at the Southeast Treatment Plant, which prompted the opening of our Southeast Construction Information Hub at 1800 Oakdale Ave. Improvements at Oceanside Treatment Plant aren’t quite as numerous as at SEP, but just as critical, as the facility experienced failures within the digesters in November that reiterates the urgent need for improvements to our treatment facilities. While construction in the City is booming and cost of living as at an all-time high we were still able to obtain the necessary rate increases, that went in effect in July, to keep work flowing while at the same time recognizing the burden this may place on some of our customers we continue to pursue, and receive, low-interest financing in the form of Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (WIFIA) and Clean Water State Revolving Fund (SRF) loans. This 2018 annual report provides a review of our efforts and recent accomplishments, and a look ahead to the year to come as we continue to invest in our critical facilities, the people who build and run them, and the communities in which they’re located. As testament to the hard work underway and a preview of what the future holds at SEP we created a video with the SSIP’s leadership and staff to hopefully get you as excited about our Program as we are.
