A world leader in its field , Nuclear Restora on Services ( NRS ), previously Magnox Ltd , is responsible for safely decommissioning the first genera on nuclear and research sites across the UK , restoring the sites for all our futures . We are responsible for ensuring that our ac vi es are carried out safely , securely and with due regard for the environment . We are preparing to welcome the seven advanced gas-cooled reactor sites ( AGRs ), currently managed by EDF , for decommissioning , as well as other future missions . We also operate a hydro-electric plant .
In 2023 , Dounreay joined NRS as a division of the company . Dounreay was the centre of the UK ' s research programme into nuclear fast breeder reactors for 4 decades , and is now a site of decommissioning , major construc on and waste management as it dismantles one of the most complex and hazardous legacies of the 20th century .
NRS employs several thousand staff and contractors across the UK and maintains an HSE recognised RPA Body which advises both NRS and a number of contract partners in their decommissioning work .

Nuclear Waste Services ( NWS ) is part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority ( NDA ) group , the non-departmental public body responsible for clean-up of the UK ' s historical nuclear sites . At NWS , we specialise in managing and disposing of the radioac ve waste produced from the nuclear technologies that have been part of our lives for more than 60 years and will con nue to play a role in the UK ' s energy mix during the decades ahead . Our goal is to ensure that all this waste is managed safely and securely , through adop ng more innova ve and sustainable approaches to be er protect people and the environment , both now and for the future .
Our work covers four key areas :
• Integrated Waste Management Programme - which promotes innova on and efficiencies in new waste management capability and iden fies opportuni es to manage waste be er .
• Waste Services - which provides waste management services and solu ons to customers throughout the UK , covering the full waste lifecycle .
• Waste Opera ons - which manages and operates the na onal Low Level Waste Repository in Cumbria .
• Major Capital Programmes - which delivers large-scale capital projects , star ng with si ng and construc on of the UK ' s Geological Disposal Facility Infrastructure
We ' re supported by a combined team of around 850 people whose skills cover nuclear science , technology , engineering , safety , security , programme management , environmental protec on , and community engagement .
