The Food Standards Agency ( FSA ) is a non-ministerial government department and plays an important role in ensuring the highest standards of food safety . It is involved in the mul - government agency research survey programme called ' Radioac vity in Food and the Environment ( RIFE )' which measures radioac vity from different parts of the food chain , including for people who live close to nuclear sites and eat locally produced food . The FSA also has a role to play during emergency situa ons where it collaborates with other government departments as part of the Joint Agency Modelling response and issues food restric ons as appropriate to keep the public safe from consuming contaminated radioac ve foodstuffs .
