The Society for Radiological Protection , a Chartered body , is the UK Associate Society affiliated to the International Radiation Protection Association ( IRPA ). Formed in 1963 , it is a major scientific society for all who are concerned professionally with the safety aspects of ionising and non-ionising radiation in industry , medicine , research , power generation , defence , education , and central and local government .
Mission Statement
SRP is a professional and learned society that was founded in 1963 and was incorporated by Royal Charter in 2007 . Our Royal Charter states that the object of the Society is to “ promote the science and art of radiation protection and allied fields for the public benefit ”.
The Charter goes on to list how we achieve this ; summarised below as :
- Promote , advance and disseminate , to the public advantage , knowledge of radiation protection ; - Encourage , support and advance education and learning in radiation protection ; and - Promote high professional standards for the public benefit

The Society is a Registered Charity in England & Wales No . 1122804 . It is governed by the grant of a Royal Charter which is supported by bylaws and regulations . It is a company incorporated by Royal Charter ( RC820 ).
The Society would like to express its thanks to all those employers who support the Society by allowing staff to attend the various committees . Without this support from employers the Society would not be able to achieve the amount it does .
