Director’s Foreword
Education is at the heart of the Chazen’s mission,
so we are pleased to present Squad: The Calling of
the Common Hero, Photography by Faisal Abdu’Allah.
Students worked collaboratively with the artist—
who was also their professor—to develop the
details and theme of the show. The students not
only had access to the Chazen’s exhibit space, but
also were given the opportunity to work with the
museum’s professional staff as part of their
learning experience.
Generous support for this exhibition has been
provided by the Chazen Museum of Art Council
and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the
State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment
for the Arts.

Director, Chazen Museum of Art
Realizing this show, with its oversized portraits,
was no small task. The larger-than-life-size prints
had to be shipped from California and then
mounted for display in Madison. The museum’s
chief registrar Ann Sinfield coordinated shipping
from Magnolia Editions in Oakland, California,
and preparators Steve Johanowicz and Kate
Wanberg shepherded the artwork through the
mounting process.
The catalogue, which comes in digital and a
limited printed format, was designed and executed
by Jeff Weyer. Editor Kirstin Pires worked with the
students to prepare their essays for publication and
oversaw production of the book.
