LET TER FROM THE WELLNESS DIRECTOR
CARA'S CARDIO
Did you know that February is Heart Health Awareness
month? Chances are that you or someone you love has
been affected by heart disease. This disease affects so
many Americans and, in most cases, its preventable.
When it comes to our health, an ounce of prevention
is worth a pound of cure and one of the best ways to
prevent heart disease is exercise! Cardiovascular exercise
like walking, biking, and dancing are great ways to
reduce your risk but they aren’t the only options! Did
you know that when you lift weights or even breathe
deeply in a yoga class, you are working your heart?
Ideally though, you should aim for more vigorous
exercise.
The American Heart Association recommends at least
150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic
activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic
activity, better yet, a combination of both, preferably
spread throughout the week. Add moderate- to high-
intensity muscle-strengthening activity (such as
resistance or weights) on at least 2 days per week. If that
seems out of reach for you, just spend less time sitting.
Even light-intensity activity can offset some of the risks
of being sedentary. To get maximum benefits, try being
active at least 300 minutes (5 hours) per week.
Lucky for you, there are lots of ways to have fun while
meeting these recommendations right in your own
neighborhood! Zumba, Adult Active, Step, FitBodyBliss,
HIIT, Yoga, and even Sculpt & Tone will tone up
your heart muscles so come take advantage of all the
class options you have at the Spanish Well’s Activity
Center! All classes are included at no additional cost for
appropriate members.
