FIFA Women’s
World Cup
With hockey being one of the most popular sports in both Sweden and the U.S., it is
always both entertaining and rewarding to
host our annual SACC-Philadelphia Hockey
Night, where we give both potential as
well as existing members the opportunity to
enjoy the game while also broadening their
network.
After three tied games and a final defeat
against Germany in the fourth match, Sweden was eliminated from the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. This year’s soccer World Cup
was the first major international competition
with Pia Sundhage coaching the team since
returning to Sweden after coaching the US
team for over 5 years.
The third edition of the Hockey Night took
place on April 9th in the Wells Fargo Center,
where we watched our beloved Philadelphia Flyers take on the Carolina Hurricanes.
Despite none of the two teams had a
chance to make it to the playoffs going
into the game, we all had a great time
cheering them on. The evening started off
with a networking mingle inside the arena
and we were very happy to get to know
our new Blue & Yellow member, Larsson &
Scheuritzel, better!
SACC-Philadelphia hosted three happy
hours to cheer on the Swedish team, and the
divide was apparent as they faced off with
the US team on June 12th. One of the most
prominent Swedish players, Kosovare Asllani,
who was battling a knee injury throughout
the spring season, was disappointed with
the situation, and without any wins in the
four games, the result was not close to what
was anticipated.
Ahead are the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio
de Janeiro where Sweden hopes to be present. Japan’s recent win against the Netherlands means that the Netherlands, Sweden,
Switzerland and Norway are all qualifying
for Europe’s last spot in the 2016 Olympic
Games. These games may very well be held
in Sweden, as the Swedish Soccer Association recently applied for hosting the qualification rounds into Rio de Janeiro 2016.
