If you plan your trip round the local Common Riding and Gala seasons, usually June/July the towns can be quite difficult to navigate as these celebrations give way to marching pipe bands and the horse.

The A7 is a quick road if you want it to be and it takes you through Hawick, Selkirk and Galashiels before it hits your destination of Edinburgh.

Edinburgh is one of my favourite cities and there is plenty to see from the famous castle that sits on

a dormant volcano to the Fring Festival

If you decide not to carry on north to the A9, Sterling and beyond, were incidentally the RAF used to practise there bomb runs, then this is your opportunity to hop onto the A701 from Edinburgh back towards Moffat and the famous Devils Beef Tub.

The A701 takes you up over the hills and is a mixture of fast straights and undulating corners, the great thing about this road is that you can see miles ahead of you and although it is twisty, it does gives you a great opportunity to morph into Barry Sheene whilst not putting yourself or others at risk.

The road culminates as you start your descent into the town of Moffat whilst taking in the views of the Devils Beef Tub, this is basically a valley that looks like the shape of a tub or bowl, the road snakes and weaves all the way into the town, you can then continue through to Dumfries or take the quicker option of the M74 back to the border from whence you came.
