Why you should replace your air fi lters
By Melissa Erickson
H
ere’s a tip for a
healthier home:
Change your air
fi lters regularly.
“People are busy, so it is
really easy to allow this task
to slip by,” said certifi ed
air fi lter specialist Cartier
Kirby, director of sales
and customer experience
at FiltersFast.com. In
addition to promoting
healthy indoor air quality,
changing air fi lters
regularly helps protect your
heating, ventilation and air
conditioning system, Kirby said.
How oft en a fi lter needs to be
changed depends on the type of fi lter
used. FiltersFast.com recommends
changing your air fi lter every two to
three months and using a fi lter with a
Minimum Effi ciency Reporting Value, or
MERV, between 8 and 13, Kirby said.
Otherwise, a MERV 8
fi lter will be suffi cient
without sacrifi cing good
fi ltration,” Kirby said.
Unsure whether it’s
time for a change? Th ere’s
an easy test for that.
“If you look at your
fi lter and it is loaded
with dirt and dust, it is
a good idea to change it.
Th is will ensure that you
are getting proper fl ow
through the fi lter, which
will contribute to energy
cost savings,” Kirby said.
Once you’ve chosen the
correct air fi lter, consider
a subscription program
where fi lters are sent at the frequency
at which they need to be replaced.
“Having fi lters on hand is only
good when you are changing them on
time. By signing up for a subscription
or club, you are keeping the need to
change your fi lters in mind with little
work on your part,” Kirby said.

Th e common factors that contrib-
ute to how oft en you should change
your air fi lter include the number of
people and pets living in the home, as
well as local air quality, Kirby said.
“If you are concerned about allergies,
dust and other fi ne particulates that take
away from healthy indoor air quality,
you should consider a MERV 11 or 13.
