master closet

A
fabulous closet make-
over can show off your
sartorial style while
keeping you organized
in a space that is welcom-
ing and functional — with
a bit of a wow factor, too.
Many homeowners would
love to have a walk-in master
closet that is more of a show-
case rather than simply a place
to store clothes, said Angel
Martin, senior design consul-
tant at Aff ordable Closets Plus
of Bangor, Pennsylvania.
An upscale closet can cost over
$5,000 for even a small 8-by-
10-foot space, said Martin, who
works in New Jersey, New York
and Pennsylvania. More space
and additional bells and whistles
will drive the price up, she said.
Th e layout and design of a
master closet should be aestheti-
cally pleasing but also functional:
As a dressing room, a master
closet is where the action hap-
pens, so it should be organized
and clutter-free, she said.
Many clients come to Martin
prepared with an idea of what
they want, having done research
on Pinterest or Houzz, but she
says the fi rst step is to determine
your needs and necessities.
In addition to clothing, how
many pairs of shoes, purses,
jewelry, belts, scarves or hats
need to be stored? Pull-out
drawers, open shelving, display
boxes, hooks, adjustable rods
and shelving are some of the
ways items can be displayed.
Other ideas:
• Adding furniture to a
master closet, such as a cen-
ter island, can open up space
in the bedroom, Martin said.
With drawers on both sides, an
island off ers plenty of storage
as well as presenting an oppor-
tunity for display of jewelry or
handbags. Th e fl at space can
also be used to fold laundry
or pack travel bags, she said.
• For a high-end look, put
jewelry under glass on top of the
island, making it accesibile with
pull-out drawers, Martin said.
• When the closet is also a
dressing room, mirrors are
essential. Full-length mirrors
with lighting are popular, as are
mirrors on the backs of doors
and smaller mirrors posi-
tioned at face level for check-
ing accessories, Martin said.
• A comfortable chaise lounge
is a spot to lay out wardrobe
choices. At the least, an otto-
man off ers a place to sit and
put on shoes, Martin said.
• LED lighting can throw a
spotlight on handbags, shoes or
jewelry. For a glam space, many
women opt for a bling chande-
lier. Stay away from the dated
look of fl uorescents, Martin said.
• For go-to looks, weekend
wear or sports gear, locker sec-
tions are surging in popularity.
Th ey off er a space to store oft en-
used items such as the jeans and
hoodie or leggings and comfy
shirt that can be thrown on aft er
changing out of work attire.
• Hampers are essential.
People want hampers out of
the bedroom, Martin said.
• Closets with his-and-
hers sides are common.
“Men like drawers more
than open shelving, and
darker fi nishes,” she said.
If you’re considering
upgrading your master closet,
Martin suggests seeking the
expertise of a professional.
“In most areas of the
country the initial consulta-
tion is free,” she said.
