Is Social Media Harmful To the Society?

Social Media is something we humans rely on everyday for almost everything and many of us make up a society. Before, people cooked their own food without a phone to order ingredients or follow recipes. All of this shows that social media is something that has grown from the ' Gen Z ' mostly. Social media is a tool that can influence and‘ control’ our preferences relating to leisure activities. For example, through the use of algorithms and data collection it can suggest to us what digital content, movies, ads TV shows, to consume.
It is definitely a product specifically tailored to provide a person with unique benefits, and I’ m not against it. But one thing that makes me dislike social media is how its being used by us and the way it is tailored for us. Seems a little bit intrusive at times. When it comes to the world of social media it feels like the content present is infinite without an end in sight. The online world is like a canvas ready to be painted with people’ s opinions in various ways such as comments and DMs. The customization of social media is also one that is scary, it shows us the power of algorithms made of code, the same code we learn to build in schools.

Overall, my verdict is that social media is a power influencing the online world as a whole and it is making us crave more by placing us within a vicious cycle of content. Social media does have benefits for things like acquiring information but it is also a world full of information that is useless for our daily lives as a whole.
Factors such as inappropriate content can also cause harm to society because many social media accounts give suggestions on your preferences without taking age into consideration. Definitely human preference, thought and analysis is crucial in our daily lives but when it comes to social media, we might have to reframe how we use it. In our lives we are taught to control our thoughts, feelings and abilities but when a human enters an app like YouTube the app controls them. Making choices has become a tough thing for us humans to do since content influences our society and that new impression that the society creates becomes a impression that is influencing how we make our decisions on how people perceive us. Even though social media creates a societal impression it can’ t be denied that humans haven’ t always been fully objective. The biggest irony is that people now need motivational speeches and motivational interviews to even have energy to stop being lazy and go against societal conventions.
