MENTORSHIP AND REFLECTION
Kershaw ’ s reflections on his coaching career reveal the profound impact of mentorship and experience . He describes Sampson ’ s subtle advice as invaluable , noting , “ The few simple words that soak from one generation to the next are priceless and I think every coach should be seeking to find another to find the little words of guidance that soak into our future and could drastically change our future outlook for the benefit of the collective American game .” These moments of wisdom have guided Kershaw in his efforts to recently spearhead a new position within the U . S . Virgin Islands with an engagement role to help the U . S . Virgin Island Men ’ s National Team rise , currently ranked 208 out of 210 countries by FIFA ( FIFA , 2024 ). Kershaw sees this challenge as an opportunity , likening the USVI ’ s potential to a ‘ sleeping giant ’ ready to awaken through grassroots development with a diverse team of leadership . Kershaw says , “ Sampson will look you up and down , and guess the exact position you played , that ’ s like a doctor who can diagnose .”
Adding a personal touch to Kershaw ’ s journey is his choice of Avila Beach as a reflective sanctuary . Nestled on the serene Pacific coast , this small , picturesque town with a population of just 1,500 offers Kershaw a tranquil setting to pause and reflect on his diverse coaching experiences . The town ’ s calm ambiance contrasts sharply with the high-pressure environments of soccer coaching , providing a peaceful backdrop for contemplation . Kershaw notes , “ I enjoy when the odds are against us as coaches and when we begin to overcome obstacles , it ’ s that feeling we chase each day and I think if we don ’ t take a moment to reflect , then we miss the lesson , as we coaches all need this moment to grow and this is what Steve showed me as he sits with few words that transcend .”
Kershaw and Sampson , both linked in soccer history , are a walk away from one another through the famous Bob Jones Trail overlooking the serene waters of the Pacific Ocean .. When Sampson retired after leading the Cal Poly Men ’ s Soccer team , he thought it was a great place to remain and lead the Central Coast Soccer Club . Kershaw uses Avila Beach as his resting place . Having worked in the four corners of the United States , he says he gets to experience many demographics of the game . “ I feel blessed to have Steve so close in walking , in such a small town ,” Kershaw reflects .
THE ROLE OF MENTORSHIP AND REFLECTION
Kershaw ’ s career also underscores the importance of mentorship and reflection in soccer coaching . He recounts his experiences across various regions — from coaching within the Penn State University system , to the Philadelphia Union youth in the Northeast , to working with the U . S . Virgin Islands National Team and all throughout California at ID clinics and even coaching some of the youth coming out of the State of Israel . These diverse coaching environments are just one example of American coaches looking to gain a broad perspective of our game , prompting critical questions about American soccer ’ s identity and future : “ Has America reflected yet ? Where are we going ? What is our goal ?”
As the U . S . prepares to host the World Cup , these questions become increasingly relevant . Kershaw ’ s admiration for Sampson ’ s unexpected words highlights the need for mentors who can inspire and shape the future of American soccer . The sport ’ s growth and success will depend on embracing diversity , reflecting on past experiences , and striving for a unified vision that celebrates and harnesses the power of diversity ( SPORTS HISTORY NETWORK , ( 2023 ).
CONCLUSION : DIVERSE EXPERIENCES , MENTORSHIP , REFLECTION .
The evolution of soccer coaching in America must embrace the country ’ s demographic shifts and diverse influences . By integrating varied playing styles and cultural perspectives , coaches can enhance their teams and contribute to the sport ’ s growth . The historical context provided by figures like Kershaw and Sampson illustrates the profound impact of moments of mentorship and moments of reflection on the game ’ s development . As the U . S . gears up for the World Cup , it is essential for coaches , players and stakeholders to unite under a shared vision that celebrates and harnesses the power of diversity , mentorship and time for reflection .
In the end , soccer coaching is not just about tactics and strategies but also about reflecting on our journey and understanding how our diverse experiences shape the beautiful game . n
