We also continue to build strong partnerships with the legal community. Our collaboration with SBAND has been essential in raising awareness about the justice gap. The 2024 Pro Bono Summit helped spark renewed interest in volunteer service, and we look forward to continuing that momentum in 2025. Our upcoming selfhelp clinics will provide a new model for law student engagement and pro bono attorney involvement in access to justice efforts.
Legal Aid Strengthens Communities
It is important to understand civil legal aid is not only about helping individuals. It strengthens our local communities, farms, and small businesses. When someone avoids eviction, keeps their job, secures protection from abuse, or gains access to benefits, that stability ripples outward. It reduces the strain on emergency shelters, health systems, and law enforcement. It helps families stay together. It allows people to participate fully in their communities and contribute to the local economy.
At its core, legal aid is about ensuring the justice system works for everyone, not just those who can afford a private attorney.
What We Need Moving Forward
As we continue to monitor developments at the federal level, LSND remains committed to doing everything we can to continue serving our communities. But we cannot do it alone. Stable, ongoing investment in civil legal services is essential for the health of our legal system and the well-being of the people who rely on it.
We thank our colleagues, partners, and supporters across the state for standing with us. Whether through pro bono service, a financial contribution, or simply helping raise awareness, your support makes a difference. Together, we can ensure justice remains within reach for every North Dakotan.
