Peter continued to lead after the war. Like the Captain Miller character in the 1998 film Saving Private Ryan before World War II, after the war, Sgt. Granlund was a schoolteacher. His current events courses and community discussion groups grappled frankly with the most controversial topics of the day. He traveled widely and was active in civic life. He was a confident voice in his community for compassion, education, and liberty. In war, Peter had faced down the inhuman results of extreme nationalism, propaganda, and dictatorship.

Peter was a son of North Dakota, a first-generation American, a decorated soldier, a teacher, and a kind, funny, curious, and intelligent man. His 77 years of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder( PTSD) after the war represented a final and continual assignment in service to our nation.
I am so very lucky to have known him. I am especially grateful, too, my students can continue to learn from this non-lawyer’ s example of fidelity to the rule of law and ethical courage under the most stressful circumstances.
