Initially intending to become a C . P . A ., founder and president of Harris Hoisting , Tana Harris enlisted to work in finance and then logistics for the California National Guard . After her military service , she worked briefly in the grocery industry before looking for a career that would allow her to spend more time outside . “ I had several friends who were apprentices who encouraged me to get into construction . It was going back to zero for me , as I had never worked around equipment before .
But I ended up falling in love with this field .” Tana completed a 5-year apprenticeship with Operating Engineers Local 3 , working on all types of equipment , then spent about 6 years as a crane oiler before becoming a crane operator .
