We at UND School of Law are fully committed to serving our tribal communities through our program of legal education , and we take great pride in the privilege we have been given to educate tribal citizens to become lawyers . We have a strong national reputation for addressing the complexities of federal Indian law and tribal law , a reputation which has been exemplified and magnified by our Indian Law Center and its several highly regarded and high-impact programs . These include : ( 1 ) the Tribal Judicial Institute , which has assisted tribes in developing and enhancing their court systems for over two decades ; ( 2 ) the Institute for the Study of Tribal Gaming Law and Policy , which analyzes the many legal and political issues raised by Indian gaming ; ( 3 ) the Tribal Environmental Law Project , which seeks to reduce environmental injustice by assisting tribes in developing environmental programs ; and ( 4 ) our JD certificate in federal Indian and tribal law courses , which is one of only several offered by law schools around the country .
The opportunity to witness and celebrate the installation of the flags of the Five Tribes of North Dakota in the VandeWalle Courtroom was one of the most moving and meaningful experiences I have had in the 11 years I have been a member of our UND Law community . I am truly grateful to all who provided their leadership and support in making this event possible . I look forward to a future with these flags , and all they represent , proudly displayed in the room in our law school that is most rich in tradition and most respected in its name .
