And of course, the third thing I remember most about
Justice VandeWalle is his kindness. When Mike Wagner and
I organized Justice VandeWalle’s 75th birthday party that
coincided with his 30th year on the bench, I was amazed how
many people – federal judges, former governors, the present
governor, and dozens of others, including people out of state
– were more than happy to attend the celebration. Those who
could not attend sent in letters of accolades. The common
denominator of every comment about Justice VandeWalle
included references to his kindness.
Justice VandeWalle is indeed one-of-a-kind, and we have all
benefited from his intellect, graciousness, and humanity.
