LAHSER ROAD /////////////////////////////////// At presstime, the group was in the thick of its 2012-13 season. … Theology teacher Thane Hall didn’t let the 2,434 miles between Los Gatos, Calif., and his classroom in Bloomfield Hills keep him from his teaching duties. Hall, who was attending a Christian Brothers-sponsored conference on ecology in February, taught his classes each day using Skype, technology that allowed him to communicate with his students by simultaneously using a microphone for voice, a webcam for video, and instant messaging for communication. … The new 39th District State Representative Klint Kesto ’99, who was elected in November, paid a visit in March to Scott Kuschel’s AP History class at Brother Rice to discuss government, law and politics. … English teacher Mrs. Dawn Zink welcomed best-selling authors Elmore Leonard and his son, Peter ’69, as special guest speakers in her class on April 16. The event was an Irish Nite Auction item that was purchased by a family and donated to Mrs. Zink. Joe Dudley ’14 was on-hand to hear his grandfather (Elmore) and uncle (Peter) talk with the class about the writing craft. ATHLETICS: The football team captured its second straight state championship in November with a thrilling 35-28 win over Muskegon. A few weeks after the title, the program’s ninth overall, Head Coach ACADEMICS: BEAM&R (Business and Entrepreneurial Alliance of Marian & Rice) sent 29 of the estimated 3,000 Michigan high school students to the DECA State Conference in Grand Rapids in March. Two Brother Rice students, Nick Busuito ’14 and Ike Onwuzurike ’14, moved on to Nationals in Anaheim, Calif., in April, in the subject area of Business Law and Ethics. In addition, Jack Deters ’13, Will Markley ’14 and Zach Weissenborn ’13 were finalists. The ever-expanding group, under the direction of Mark Barron ’84 and PE/ Business Teacher Mark Dyar ’75, raised funds for the competitions by selling concessions at home football and basketball games this year. … Michael Cooney ’13 and Alex Dennis ’13 advanced to the Finalist round in the National Merit Scholar 2013 Program. In September, the two were chosen among only 1 percent of their peers nation-wide as National Merit Finalists, based on their performances on the PSAT test in 2011. Of those, approximately 15-20 percent were selected for the Finalist round i n January, a screening that was based on applications, transcripts, essays and letters of recommendation. Winners will be announced in May. … Nearly threequarters of the Brother Rice student body earned a place on the school’s honor rolls for the first semester. … The Debate team made it to the final 16 teams in the world in the Bickel & Brewer Foundation/ NYU International Public Policy Forum. They were defeated in the Sweet 16 by The Dalton School (N.Y.) in February. The 200 medley relay team of Blinstrub-GradyLehnertz-Kouvaris and the 200 free relay team of Krause-Grady-Bradford Jones ’14-Nodland set All-State and AllAmerican times, while the 400 Free Relay team of Kouvaris-Nodland-BlinstrubKrause set a new State record, earning All-America & All-State honors along the way. … All-State athletes from the winter included Russell Cicerone ’13, Ross Haffey ’13 and Andrew Roye ’13 in hockey (Roye, a defenseman, was named to the Dream Team, as well); Andrew Napieraj ’13 (who finished 2nd in the state in the 145-pound class, the best finish by a Rice wrestler in more than 20 years), Josiah Thomas ’13 and Shon Powell ’14 in wrestling; and Robbie Cort ’15 in skiing. … Dominic Downs ’15 finished third at the Top 3-Point Shooters Challenge, an event held during the MHSAA State Basketball Finals at the Breslin Center at Michigan State. Downs had the second-best 3-point percentage in school history this season (48.2 %). … Snowboarder Kyle Mack ’14 landed the first-ever “Frontside Triple Rodeo” in the World Snowboard Tour’s Superfinal at the O’Neill Evolution Big Air 2013 in Davos Switzerland in January. Mack was ranked #3 on the tour at presstime. Al Fracassa, 80, announced that he will return for one more season and then retire. … The basketball, hockey, skiing and swimming teams all were Academic All-State this season. …. The bowling team won its first-ever matches this winter and sent a student-athlete, Michael Cleve ’14, to the State finals for the first time. Cleve rolled up a 190 average and finished second in the Regionals. … Sergio Perkovic ’13, an All-State football and lacrosse player, is a finalist for the Michigan High School Athlete of the Year, to be announced at a banquet May 13 at the Detroit Athletic Club. With a 4.2 GPA, Sergio is headed to Notre Dame to play lacrosse. … John Reschke ’13, a linebacker who is headed to East Lansing to play at Michigan State in the Fall, was the only player in Michigan named to the Parade All-American team. … The swimming team was edged out by Saline for the State Championship, but not without swimming its best meet of the year. Nick Lehnertz ’13, Drake Michalzuk ’13, Pat Nodland ’13, Joe Krause ’14, Quinn McFarlen ’14, Mark Blinstrub ’15, Gust Kouvaris ’15 and Drew Grady WARRIOR SPIRIT: The Warriors for Life, a group of Brother Rice students and faculty who promote Catholic teachings, boarded a bus for its annual trip to Washington, DC, to participate in the annual March for Life in January. Led by Health/PE teacher Joe Rayles and Theology teacher Emad Jonna, the group of 55 students was among an estimated 650,000 who marched in the nation’s capital. … The school’s new baseball facility was scheduled to be dedicated / SPRING 2013 / 7
