One of the most extreme cases of a company failing to ensure the safety of its workers, Bhopal is a lesson that has yet to be heeded by all factories. A more recent case, on April 24, 2013, thousands of laborers- primarily women- died in Bangladesh's Raza Plaza when the ceiling above them collapsed. Stores in the building had closed the day before when cracks were discovered, yet the workers were forced to come in. The supervisors were evidently at fault; the building was in a poor state and they had been given a proper warning. Even so, the factory's major distributors such as Walmart claimed that they had no knowledge of their products being manufactured in such terrible conditions.
The company's failure to take responsibility is unjust, moreso how compensation has yet to be given fully to the family's of the deceased. Their unwillingness to recognize their workers rights is against Article 23 of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in which every human being is entitled to favorable working conditions as well as enough payment to sustain their families.
