MINING LUBRICANTS
Yasser Majluf , Managing Director of FUCHS Lubricants SpA in Chile , added : “ The Chilean lubricant market offers significant potential for FUCHS . We see a strong trend towards high performance lubricants . With our growing local FUCHS team in Chile , we are happy to support our expanding customer base in segments like mining , food , wind power and automotive .”
ImmersIon cooling for mining BEV applications
Jonathan Montales , Development & Application Engineer at TotalEnergies Lubrifiants told The Electric Mine 2024 conference that immersion cooling with fluids increases the safety of the battery , regardless of the battery cell type used . He also outlined several opportunities to reduce the cost and weight of the battery system – highlighting lighter and cheaper batteries with a simplified design – plus talked about the possibilities for ultra-fast charging .
Typically , lithium batteries in mining operate in a temperature range between 15 ° C and 35 ° C to perform optimally and secure a long cycle life . However , during operation , a considerable amount of heat , especially at high rates , can be generated from the cell . At high temperature (> 35 ° C ) the lifetime of the battery is affected but above 70 ° C the use of lithium batteries can be dangerous , and thermal runaway ( TR ) may occur . So cooling management is essential .
But the current cooling technologies for mining BEVs are not adapted to the next generation of machines where a very fast charge is expected ie recharge in less than 10 minutes . Immersion cooling is a concept bringing a technological leap never seen before in the last 10 years in the world of lithium batteries . Total Energies ’ Cell-Shield has been designed to prevent thermal runaway propagation and to support the safety features of the battery with its effectiveness confirmed on various battery configurations .
Immersion cooling enables the mining equipment OEM and electric retrofit industry to simplify battery design plus it can manage any electric power demand scenario . In 2022 , TotalEnergies already made history by incorporating an immersion-cooled battery into a road-going vehicle .
TotalEnergies Lubrifiants has also announced the creation of the first standardised specifications for Electric Drive System ( EDS ) fluids . This development marks a significant step
Mobil Delvac Double Your Drain Challenge
The recently launched Mobil Delvac™ Double Your Drain Challenge is intended to show how its oils can improve fleet uptime , and the bottom line . With the Double Your Drain Challenge , ExxonMobil will work with the customer to double its fleet oil drain intervals up to a maximum of 2,000 hours . If it doesn ’ t hit the mark , it will give the money back .
It adds : “ With the help of our world-class field engineering team and our Mobil Serv Oil Analysis platform , we ’ re confident our newly launched off-highway diesel engine oils can get the job done . From extending oil drain intervals and equipment life to decreasing breakdowns and increasing equipment productivity , Mobil Delvac™ lubricants go the distance and beyond . Plus , they reduce engine wear and provide extreme temperature protection , so your equipment runs strong in all conditions .”
Designed with mining and construction vehicles in mind , the new Mobil Delvac™ engine oils were formulated to optimise the evolving needs of high horsepower and off-highway engines . To accomplish that , it crafted a flagship , full synthetic ( Mobil Delvac™ Ultra 5W-40 Extended Performance ) and a premium semi-synthetic ( Mobil Delvac™ Modern 15W-40 Extended Performance ) diesel engine oil with a reinforced additive system designed for use in a wide range of heavy-duty applications .
The new off-highway engine oils offer longer oil life , leading to less spending on oil plus fewer oil changes and more robust protection from engine wear .
forward three years after the launch of the Quartz EV Fluids and Rubia EV Fluids ranges , designed specifically for hybrid and electric vehicles . These specifications were developed using TotalEnergies ' advanced expertise and resources , ensuring that the fluids meet rigorous criteria such as viscosity , oxidation , corrosion , durability and material compatibility , while optimising the energy efficiency and performance of electric transmissions and motors .
