operations. Our job is to help our design and
engineering teams deliver product and service
solutions that meet that need. So we’ve set up
the Innovation Centre as an in-house space for
design thinking and concept development. It has
a metallurgical lab and a host of other
capabilities including rapid prototyping, 3D
scanning and printing and a virtual reality system
all of which adds an important new dimension to

Bradken bucket first in Africa
In the wider mining market, Bradken recently
announced the installation of a new large
hydraulic excavator bucket in Africa. Fully
designed and manufactured by us, this complete
28 m 3 Caterpillar 6060 extra heavy duty hydraulic
face shovel bucket was its first in service in
northwest Africa. Brad Ward, Executive General
Manager of Bradken’s Mining Mobile Plant
business said the installation on January 1, 2019
went according to plan. “This was an exciting
install for Bradken and especially our team in
Africa. It’s the first complete face shovel bucket
to be delivered by us into the West African
market. As a site-specific custom build, the
fitment of the bucket went smoothly. No
additional work was required before it went into
operation, much to the delight of our customer.”
Ward said the bucket included a number of
design features that gave the customer peace of
mind when putting a Bradken product to work on
their site. “This Cat 6060 shovel bucket features
additional wear material including our Guardian
wear blocks and D10 grader blades. These
protect the underside of the bucket from the
highly abrasive digging conditions on this site.
The bucket is also completely interchangeable
with Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM)
parts. Customers are able to buy this bucket
knowing it will fit with their OEM backboards and
jaw segments without issue.” The company says
the quality and reliability of Bradken’s bucket
design also means customers can better plan
bucket changeout schedules, improving overall
site productivity.
MTG showcases Cast Lips Terra
Staying with hydraulic excavator wear
parts, MTG chose the Bauma show in Munich
earlier this year for the official launch of MTG
Cast Lips Terra, designed especially for the heavy
mining industry, and more specifically for
hydraulic excavators weighing more than 400 t.
The slim, light design of the Cast Lip Terra the
company says allows for reduced fuel
consumption and improved penetration, which
as a consequence optimises cycle times.
“Its large contact areas and smooth
transitioning reduce plastic deformation and
concentrated strain in critical areas. Additionally,
the design of the GET, which is specific to the
Cast Lip Terra, allows for protecting critical wear
zones, thus increasing wear life. Lip
reconstruction is made easier thanks to this
protection and its adapted geometry.”
Cast Lip Terra is suitable for all applications
and terrain types, and comes equipped with all
of MTG’s premium GET systems: TwinMet and
ProMet. “This combination offers efficient,
optimum lip protection. The Cast Lip Terra is
available in two GET settings: the ‘Standard’
option, for applications prioritising bucket
penetration, and the ‘Heavy Duty’ option, for
high impact and wear applications.”
The Terra range features 4 different models.
The 148” and 169” size 5 Cast Lips Terra are
equipped with the TwinMet 5/4 system, aimed at
400 to 600 t machines. The range also includes
the 169” and 201” size 7 Cast Lips Terra,
equipped with TwinMet 7/6, which are designed
for 700 to 800 t machines. All the MTG Cast Lips
Terra models may equip the ‘Standard’ or ‘Heavy
Duty’ settings.
