Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to Everyone
The Holiday Season is almost upon us and there is so much going on it’ s hard to keep up. In this edition of SportsLife Magazine, we have so many people we want you to meet, it’ s even hard to keep track.
This is, after all, the 40 th Anniversary
Season of Murder Ball, or Wheelchair Rugby, as it’ s called these days and we want you to meet two of the veterans of the game: Arin Smith and threetime Paralympic medalist Jared Funk. As well, four Manitobans have been named to Canada’ s national U-18 and U-19 football teams and they’ re right here – Andreas Dueck, Tong King, Brody Williams and Galata Gurmu.
This is also the National Letter of Intent signing period for athletes getting set to go to NCAA Division 1 schools next season and Sisler High School’ s Raizel Guinto, just signed her letter to play basketball at Louisiana Tech in Reston, La., a pretty highly-regarded NCAA Division 1 basketball school.
Meanwhile, down the road from Sisler, the University of Winnipeg men’ s volleyball team is just getting the 2016-17 Canada West volleyball season underway and despite some injuries, coach Larry McKay’ s Wesmen will be a challenger all season long. In this issue, we want you to meet the team’ s fifth-year captain, Brendan Thielmann, our cover boy for November / December.
And down at the Fort Garry campus, the University of Manitoba men’ s basketball team will make a lot of noise this year. Led by captains Justus Alleyn and A. J. Basi, the Bisons just might be the best team in Canada.
We’ ll also introduce you to triathlete Nicole Walker, Bisons football players DJ Lalama, Geoff Gray, Shai Ross and Evan Foster and badminton star Arnish Patel and we want to re-introduce you to figure skaters Deidre and Danae Russell and Olympic soccer hero Desiree Scott. And we’ ll also pay tribute to the new inductees of the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame and the men who made Brandon University hockey so successful back in the day.
Here at SportsLife Magazine, we’ re thrilled that Manitobans love to play, no matter the sport and no matter the time of year. We are preparing for the holidays, but that doesn’ t mean the games will stop. In fact, there are so many holiday basketball, volleyball, hockey, ringette and indoor soccer tournaments coming up that we can’ t get to all of them. Have a great season, everyone, and please enjoy another edition of SportsLife Magazine, Winnipeg’ s Place to Play.
