The hockey games were action packed season at BU). Marsh, Gerlinger, and Winkler had no trouble getting the blue team offence going as they claimed the victory 6-2. “I’m not surprised,” said Marsh. “I’ve never left the ice. I still play old timers in Salmon Arm (B.C.) with a lot of younger guys, so I am still skating.” The next game featured players who hadn’t yet reached their 50th birthday. It started off like any alumni game with wide open passing lanes, breakaways, and some highlight reel saves. But with the star power that was one the ice, Craig Anderson (Head scout for the Winkler Flyers and player evaluator the Edmonton Oil Kings), Tyson Ramsey (Head Coach of the Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings), Scott Hlady (Equipment Manager for the Brandon Wheat Kings) and Troy Leslie (Head Coach and General Manager of the Virden Oil Capitals), it was only a matter of time before the competitive juices took over. Late in the game, Team Blue held a slim 7-6 lead, so Team White decided that six players were more valuable and pulled their goaltender. It would not turn out as hoped, however, as the Team Blue found the empty net for the 8-6 win. “It’s funny to reminisce in the dressing room,” said Hlady, adding that the boys’ hadn’t changed much. “For the most part, all the boys, no one’s changed. You know we’re all a little bit bigger, but some of us aren’t.” Ramsey showed no surprise in the level of play by the boys. “Even though it was an alumni game, guys are still competitive and that’s why they were able to play at that level,” he said. “We had a lot of fun out there.” Moving into the evening, the team was once again honoured back at the Healthy Living Centre for the rematch between the Bobcats and the Wolfpack. The men’s volleyball team paid a special tribute to the old hockey stars themselves, coming onto the court for warmups wearing some of the remaining hockey sweaters from the days of the program. Before the volleyball game began a group of the alumni gathered at centre court for a banner raising ceremony as the school immortalized its 93-year hockey history. l The Opening Face Off BU Hockey Alumni 2016 sportslife / 25
