For the Elite , Sport is a 24 / 7 / 365 Commitment

Yes , I know . It ’ s July and we have a high school football player on the cover . Seems a tad early considering the Winnipeg High School Football League doesn ’ t get underway until September .

For one thing , elite athletes don ’ t stop training at any time during the year and for another , most of the high school football players you will meet in this issue have been playing all spring and summer with head coach Don Burrell ’ s U-18 Team Manitoba . Seems that these days , it ’ s football season all the time .
This is our Annual WHSFL Players to Watch edition . Inside you will meet Vincent Massey quarterback Andreas Dueck , THE player to watch this season , plus three players from each of the WHSFL ’ s three Divisions – Potter , Vidruk and Currie – who are expected to have ( a ) outstanding and ( b ) highly entertaining seasons .
If you want to go out and watch some football this fall , go watch the young men you will meet on these pages . They can play . And they ’ ve been working on it since the last down from last season .
In the meantime , there is a lot more going on than just football . We ’ ll introduce you to a couple of outstanding fencers , Cameron Mackay , 20 , and Sarah Filby , 17 . Both recently named the Canadian Fencing Federation ’ s Junior Athletes of the Year for 2015-16 . You ’ ll also meet four lawn bowlers who have either won national championships or competed for Canada ’ s national team or are trying to make Canada ’ s national team ( or all of the above ): Shirley Fitzpatrick-Wong , John Bjornson , Nathan Jacobucci and Rob Law . You ’ ll also meet all-around athlete Victoria Tachinski , Para-Badminton champion Olivia Meier , basketball coach Tim Friesen , Olympic cyclist Leah Kirchmann and football star Zack Williams .
Sport never stops and that ’ s a good thing . This month ’ s edition of SportsLife is chalked full of stories about athletes and events and , as always , we sent our photographers , James Carey Lauder and Jeff Miller out to get a feel for what ’ s been going on in Winnipeg this summer .
So sit back and enjoy . And thanks for reading SportsLife : Winnipeg ’ s Place to Play .
