SportsLife is Manitoba’s amateur sports magazine. This is where
sports fans will meet the Olympians of tomorrow and the
medalists of today and they all compete right here in Manitoba.
We exist to pay tribute to those who make sport so important
to this province.
Published by SportsLife Publications, it is edited by Scott
Taylor and is designed and developed by Scott Taylor, Debbie
Dunmall and OV Suvajac. SportsLife Magazine is printed by The
Winnipeg Sun.
Any opinions expressed belong solely to the authors and do

Summer’s Coming,
Sport Changes
S
ummer is coming and
with it are changes. As
you can see, there is no
basketball or figure skating on
our convers these days. In fact,
it’s tennis, with some high
school football, baseball and
golf thrown in.
Oh yeah, and the seasonal
wrap ups for hockey, ringette
and thoroughbred racing.
Our May/June edition for
2016 will introduce you to
some of Manitoba’s best and brightest young athletes.
Our cover girl, 11-year-old Reece Carter is a remarkable
nationally-ranked tennis player who might just be as good
a golfer. Cole Bennett is a professional horse trainer at
Assiniboia Downs with 27 beautiful animals in his barn.
And he’s just turned 19. Wes Darvill is a pro baseball player
from Langley, B.C., who drove to Winnipeg this spring to
play third base for our Winnipeg Goldeyes. He’s been in the
Chicago Cubs organization for seven years and he’s just
turned 24.
They are young, gifted and ready to compete and they
speak volumes about the types of athletes we get to watch
and enjoy in this province.
In this issue of SportsLife, we pay tribute to Manitoba’s
best gymnasts, its best high school and university football
players and in our regular photo section, we congratulate
the brilliance of the Brandon Wheat Kings, a hockey team
that won a major Western Canadian championship with 13
Manitoba players on its roster.
Oh yes, and we also pay tribute to our provincial
aboriginal hockey teams, the province’s best ringette player
and a Winnipeg-based basketball program that is turning
out some of the finest young athletes in the country.
So sit back and enjoy. We hope you meet someone you
didn’t know and learn about something you’d perhaps
never thought about before. Winnipeg is blessed. It’s also
Canada’s Place to Play.
