What’s in a name?
What’s in a name:
W.C. Fields once said; “It ain’t what
they call you, it’s what you answer to.”
The following are a few of the team
names that adorn the game sheets
within the Winnipeg Ringette League.
Barley Queens Open 2
The team name of an Open 2 team
full of young, talented, girls from the
Interlake. “The name was chosen because we are all country kids who not
only know what it is like to have a good
time, but also what it is like to work
our butts off. If it is on the ice or off, we
know there is a lot expected from us
and we know how to deliver. We are a
team of kids doing what we love” says
Danika Romaniw.“We designed our
new jerseys using the “Boston Bruins”
jerseys as a template, says Brooke Ogilvie and it took off from there.
If they are on the ice or sipping
something that has been on ice, this
group of ladies will enjoy the hangover.
Wii Not Fit Open 4
The player/coach, Kristen Garvie of the
Open 4 team that’s named , Wii Not Fit
says “the name was the only suggestion we got when asked for team name
ideas. No one else had any ideas but
we all thought that it was a fitting and
witty idea. We’re a team of 18-23 year
olds that are really just playing for fun,
most of us out of shape so it just made
sense. I would say it promotes team
pride because it just reminds us of the
fact that we’re just there to have a good
time. We’ve had a great year so far, a
couple wins but mainly losses but we
don’t even notice. We have bright pink
jerseys which are mainly so that we
wouldn’t have to worry about having
a color conflict with opposing teams
but it just adds to our casual and fun
attitude for the season.
Sounds like Wii Not Fit should be Wii
Have Fun.
Gateway Flyers U12
“As a team, the U 12 Gateway Flyers
looked at a variety of names such as
30 / sportslife
the Hammerhead Sharks or the Killer
Sharks but in the end it was decided
that they team chant was easier to yell
from the bench than the other two and
what better motivation is there than all
the adoring fans screaming “Go Flyers
Go” says team spokesperson, Dani
Beaudry
It seems that they learned this last
year after yelling the words of encouragement of ”Go Gateway Gliding
Penguins Go” by the time the chant
was complete, the ring had cleared the
zone. After we received our jerseys,
“Orange Crush” was also placed in for
consideration but in the end we went
for the standard Gateway Flyer chant.
The team names bring us closer to be
a part of our motto;
Garden City ACES Open 3 & U 16 B:
Back in 2010, a newly developed junior
“A” team was looking to put their personal touch on an “A” team which was
put together without tryouts. Prior to
the season beginning, they should have
been out of the Maples Community
Centre but the hierarchy would not
allow any name other than the Monarchs to adorn their teams. Something
pretty common with local community
centers. The team approached Garden
City who were more than willing to
accept the team, name and all. The
WRL had a working relationship with
then HOT103.1 FM (Now Virgin Radio
103.1) and Ace Burpee and the name,
the players and the attitude was “Let’s
do this.” The specially designed logo,
was put together to be incorporated
with a blue ring breaking through
some ice. The logo designer, Winnipeg
Outfitters, designed this logo in short
order. The original team chose the color and the rest took care of itself. The
logo, the fully sublimated jerseys have
since erupted into not only the Open 3
ACES (The original Junior “A” team) but
