On a gorgeous August afternoon in front of a tremendous crowd at
Assiniboia Downs, Canterbury invader Flashy Jewel won the 67th
Manitoba Derby. In a magnificent two-horse battle to the wire, Flashy
Jewel with Adolfo Morales aboard outduelled the pre-race favourite
Witt Six with Chavion Chow in the irons to win the $75,000 Manitoba
Derby presented by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries. It was a tremendous
none-to-nose battle as Flashy Jewel grabbed the lead before reaching the
clubhouse, was joined on the backstretch by Witt Six and went whip-towhip down the stretch. Flashy Jewel had just enough to hold on and win
by a head. l
