Alpine Canada Hosts National Ski Day at Holiday Mountain
On Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, Alpine Canada will play
host to its second annual National Ski Day at Holiday
Mountain at La Riviere, 90 kilometres from Winnipeg.
Participating resorts will be offering lift tickets for $15
for an entire day of skiing on Jan. 9. The event aims to
give Canadians an opportunity and reason to hit the
slopes this winter – at an affordable price. It’s a familyfriendly activity across the country to get Canadians
outdoors and enjoying nature’s playground.
National Ringette Championship Coming to Winnipeg
Winnipeg is once again set to welcome the finest
female Ringette players from across Canada after
having won the bid to play host to the 2018 National
Ringette Championship. The National Championship
will feature approximately 40 teams from across
Canada, competing in three age groups, U16 (1415 years), U19 (16, 17 and 18 years), and NRL (19+
years). Winnipeg has played host to this event in 1979
(the inaugural event), 1988, 1995 and 2005. Winnipeg
was selected and awarded the event over bids from
Mississauga, Sault Ste. Marie, Burnaby and Ottawa.
The Championships, scheduled from April 7-14,
2018 will be held at the MTS Iceplex, and Seven Oaks
Arena. This year’s National competition will be held in London, Ontario and the 2017 event will be held in Leduc, Alta.
Bisons Men’s Volleyball on Red-Hot Streak
The No. 4-ranked University of
Manitoba Bison men’s volleyball
team kept their undefeated streak
alive earlier this month, winning
in three straight sets (25-21, 2519, 25-20) over the fifth-ranked
Mount Royal Cougars (Sat., Nov.
7) at Investors Group Athletic
Centre. Garth Pischke, in his
34th year as the team’s head
coach, said his team’s success
was due to plain ordinary
consistency: “We’re really
keeping our composure, we’re
not thinking about the score at
all,” he said. “We’re just thinking
about the next play.” As Pischke’s
Bisons keep improving, they are
now one of the favorites to bring
home a national championship.
