It hasn’t taken long for the Minto Bowl become
a high school football tradition in Winnipeg. It
began in 2011 when Tec Voc and Daniel McIntyre
Collegiate found themselves in the same
division of the Winnipeg High School Football
League. DMCI had rejoined the league a few
years before, and the Hornets moved down to the
Currie Division after a tough year. So NDP cabinet
minister Andrew Swan bought a trophy, which
would be awarded to the winner of the annual
matchup, and a rivalry was born. After DMCI took
the first three meetings, Tec Voc finally got a win
this fall, when they defeated Daniel 20-17 on Sept.
6. The game was called with three minutes to play
due to the weather conditions.
“Here’s an odd fact,” said Swan. “The matchup was
originally dubbed the ‘Minto Cup,’ but Lacrosse
Manitoba threatened legal action because they had
a trophy of the same name; so Minto Bowl it is.”l
